Skansen open air museum

We accidentally decided to go to the Skansen museum - we went on a bus tour of the city, which drove around Djurgården (among other places) pointing out the attractions available there. We thought there was some deal for getting in cheaply because we'd been on the bus tour but had managed to get ourselves confused. But we decided to go anyway.

It is an open air museum taking up much of the island. It started as a collection of buildings from around Sweden before the industrialisation of the country. So theres a lot of buildings which don't appear to be in their correct context (which gave the place a slightly sickly sweet Disney meets New England feel).

First stop was food, we climbed from the entrance up to the nearest cafe, sat upon a tall rocky outcrop. The venison stew was remarkably good value (being something like 10 krona more than you'd pay for a McDonalds hamburger) and gave A. her first taste of lingonberries. Just what we needed.

We noticed a lot of people carrying big bags of apples, and decided to go the direction they came from. There was an apple and pear festival going on, but the poor pears hardly had a look in, the apples stole the show. There were a number of stalls selling apples in various forms, mostly raw for later consumption but you could have them cooked in different ways.

The museum, as well as having many buildings from all over the country, houses a zoo with a number of animal enclosures and walks through reproductions of rural scenes.

Lindormsnäs

I thought I'd take advantage of having a car and have a bit of a drive around after dropping A off at the airport. A quick look at the map showed a labyrinth near Bro, so that seemed like a viable destination. However I got a bit distracted on the way there and found myself following signs to Lindormsnäs.

Its a small village on a ness pointing out into Lake Mälaren. I was a little disappointed when I got there how unimportant the lake seems to be to the village, its something at the bottom of the fields, rather than being a central part of character of the place.

Låssa church

Around the corner from Lindormsnäs is Låssa, the village closest to the Rösaring Stone Labyrinth - the maze itself is buried deep in a country park/nature reserve beyond the village. I didn't have time to visit it before returning the car so is a place I want to revisit when I have some more time.

I wanted to show A. the runestones in Uppsala, so we bundled onto a crowded train and headed north. Thankfully the connection from Uplands Vasby wasn't so busy and we had a chance to relax a little before hitting the bitter cold of easter.

Midsummer celebration

We went to a midsummer Blót, these days more of a maypole style festival than the original blood sacrifice (incidentally also related to the origin of the word 'bless'...to mark with blood). Quite a number of us collected and we wandered off into the woods to find a clearing where we could erect the 'maypole' and dance around it. It was quite an honour to be invited to such an event, and an interesting insight into modern interpretations of Norse traditions.

Skansen at Midsummer - part 1

Once again we went to Skansen - for midsummer this time. They hold traditional Swedish midsummer celebrations there and the place was the busiest we've ever seen it. Still, there was a rain shower which cleared a lot of the people.

We went to Millesgården", a sculpture garden on Lidingö in the grounds of the house of, and dedicated to, the artist and sculptor Carl Milles.

There are three terraces looking back across the water toward Ropsten and beyond to the city, he collected many copies of his works around the world, including his fountain at Nacka Strand.

World Hovercraft Championship

The World Hovercraft Championship came to Stockholm, so we had to go and see. In many ways it reminded me of the old karting days, with a number of heats of different class craft culminating in a final at the end of the day.

It was an exciting day out, with some fantastic races, the smell of two stroke engines and machine oil, and the sound of a lot of air being blown around. The most exciting race had around 15 entrants and ended up with two craft nearly sinking, leading it to be called off early and rerun later.

Stockholm Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum in on the campus of the University is an impressive building we've driven past a few times and always wondered what it contained. Theres a lot interesting displays, including one on Gay Animals (which kinda suggests its rather more common in the animal world than some people would have you believe). There is also the Cosmonova, an IMAX cinema where we saw a film on black holes in rather more engaging surround than I was expecting, albeit with a somewhat vertigenous seating configuration.
